There’s a reason St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is recognized as a great place to work. Because at our world-class pediatric research hospital, every one of our professionals shares our commitment to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve. There’s a unique bond when you’re part of a team that gives their all to advance the treatments and cures of pediatric catastrophic diseases. The result is a collaborative, positive environment where everyone, regardless of their role, receives the resources, support and encouragement to advance and grow their careers and be the force behind the cures.
The Mittag laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate Position to work on the role of phase separation in transcription. We have recently elucidated molecular principles underlying phase separation coupled to percolation (see e.g. Bremer et al. Nat Chem 2022; Alshareedah et al. Nat Phys 2024; perspective published in Mittag and Pappu. Mol Cell 2023) and are now using these insights to elucidate how phase separation shapes function and disease processes (Das et al. bioRxiv 2024). We have recently contributed to work showing that small complexes formed by N-Myc have similar activities as N-Myc condensates, but that N-Myc phase separation differentially regulates a small percentage of genes that drive proliferation (Yang et al. Nat Struct Mol Biol 2024). The project will focus on transcription factors that are overexpressed in disease processes.
Position Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will help shape the direction of the research and use cell biological, in vitro biophysical and biochemical studies to characterize the activity of transcription factors and designed sequence variants. The candidate will interface with trainees and staff scientists in the Mittag lab and with collaborators in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment that will support their career development.
Minimum Education and/or Training:
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology or protein biochemistry. The candidate should demonstrate an academic record of excellence, and a strong interest in the growing field of biomolecular condensates. Experience with phase separation or chromatin-based techniques would be highly valuable to capitalize on the opportunities of this project.
About the lab and St. Jude:
The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative laboratory focused on elucidating the biophysics, biochemistry and function of condensates in the Department of Structural Biology, with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and expertise across the hospital.
