As a Science Writer, you will be responsible for researching, writing, and editing a broad range of scientific content, including manuscripts, grant proposals, strategic documents, and multimedia communications. You will transform complex scientific concepts into clear, compelling narratives for stakeholders, funding agencies, patients, families, and the wider scientific community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, write, and edit copy for manuscripts, grants, annual reports, strategic communications, etc.
  • Draft and manage high-priority manuscripts.
  • Prepare and format grant proposals, reviewer responses, and strategic documents.
  • Build effective content based on abstract concepts, tailoring messages for different audiences, including web and social media.
  • Slide deck design, story outlining, and development
  • Collaborate with scientists, patients, families, partner agencies, graphic designers, IT, and communications teams to develop compelling content.
  • Ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with organizational standards in all projects.
  • Edit manuscripts and proposals for clarity, coherence, and adherence to editorial guidelines.
  • Guide narrative development for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Coordinate with authors to integrate feedback and finalize documents.
  • Manage multiple writing projects, prioritize deadlines, and provide timely updates to stakeholders.
  • Create and develop content projects to ensure continuous delivery of new and refreshed materials.
  • Stay current on trends in scientific communication and publishing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the department and institution.

Minimum Education and/or Training:


  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences or related field required.
  • Master's degree OR PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience:


  • Minimum Requirement: 2+ years of relevant experience in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in advertising or marketing, social media, journalism, and writing in life sciences or healthcare environment.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $70,720 - $126,880 per year for the role of Scientific Writer for Center of Excellence for Data-Driven Discovery.
