The Nursing Education and Professional Development Team provides onboarding and orientation for nurses and nursing care team members, ensures competency validation and maintenance for all staff within the department of nursing, and serves as the driver and champion for many programs vital to ensuring quality care, including the Nurse Externship Program, Nurse Residency Program, and Nursing Continuing Professional Development hours just to name a few.

St. Jude is searching for a Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist (or Practitioner) see below for details and requirements for each role.


The role of NPD Specialist is to enhance, promote and maintain high standards in staff professional growth and quality patient care, the nursing professional development (NPD) specialist assesses, develops, implements and evaluates a comprehensive plan for meeting the educational needs of the nursing care team staff. This is accomplished in collaboration with managers, directors, clinical specialists, nursing staff, interprofessional team members, and other subject matter experts. The education plan includes orientation of new staff, provision of staff development activities, on-going competency assessment and continuing education programs. The NPD specialist assures staff can demonstrate appropriate job performance skills and competencies, including direct patient care and patient/family education. The roles of the NPD specialist include learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, advocate for NPD specialty, and partner for practice transitions. Overall outputs of NPD practice are learning, change, professional role competence and growth, which ultimately lead to optimal patient care, population health, protection of the public, and health literacy.


Specialist Requirements

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Master's degree required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), required. Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), OR Advanced Cardiac Life Support ACLS, preferred as applicable.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum requirement: 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong experience in conceptualizing, planning implementing and evaluating educational initiatives to address practice gaps for licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel.
  • Some experience with data collection methods and analysis of data to assess outcomes measures.
  • Proven experience in research, evidence-based practice (EBP) and quality improvement activities.
  • Strong experience in identification, development, and implementation of appropriate strategies to support role transition, role integration, skill acquisition.
  • Strong knowledge of competency assessment programs, required.
  • Strong knowledge/ some experience with budget development and cost control methods, preferred.
  • Some experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Some experience managing/ mentoring early career team members.
  • Demonstrated strong ability to build collaborative partnerships, that may include interprofessional groups within the organization, academic/ practice partnerships, and community partnerships.
  • Proven performance in earlier role.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law:

  • LC: RN-TN) Must possess a current Tennessee State Board of Nursing license, if primary residence is Tennessee, or a Nurse Licensure non-Compact state.
  • (LC: RN-TN, RN-MISS, RN-ARK or RN-KY) Must possess a current State Board of Nursing license in the state of primary residence, if the state is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • (NPD-BC) Certification in Nursing Professional Development from the American Nurses Credentialing Center is required within 2 years of hire.

As a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner, you'll help prepare St. Jude nurses to provide high quality care through development, facilitation, and promotion of professional development programs including educational responsibilities for several outpatient clinics and our student management program, all with a high standard of excellence expected of all St. Jude professionals. Alongside a tight-knit team of other nursing professional development practitioners, you'll serve as a learning facilitator, mentor, and an invaluable part of the nursing leadership team, connecting St. Jude nurses with the support, skills, and savvy they need to provide the best-in-class service for which St. Jude is known. Education required for Practitioner: 

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • BSN Degree Required

Experience required for Practitioner:

  • Four (4) years of nursing experience required
  • One (1) year of pediatric experience required
  • Hematology and Oncology experience preferred

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law:

  • Must possess a current Tennessee State Board of Nursing license, if primary residence is Tennessee, or a Nurse Licensure non-Compact state.
  • Must possess a current State Board of Nursing license in the state of primary residence, if the state is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • Certification in Nursing Professional Development from the Association for Nursing Professional Development or other relevant specialty certification required within 2 years of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $86,320 - $154,960 per year for the role of Nursing Professional Development Specialist or Practitioner.
