Provide technical support to the Preclinical Therapeutic Program (PTP) in the Center for In Vivo Imaging and Therapeutics (CIVIT) and ensure compliance with animal health and welfare programs. Employ and maintain effective communication with research personnel who need animal imaging and administration of therapeutics, their direct supervisor and the Core Director. Perform other tasks as assigned to meet objectives of the Preclinical Therapeutic Program.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs imaging procedures as directed and in support of research staff
  • Assists principal investigators with induction and maintenance of anesthesia
  • Performs proper animal handling, restraint, record keeping and identification of animals that are imaged
  • Administers test materials, medications and performs treatments as scheduled
  • Coordinates transportation of animals between imaging areas and holding rooms to ensure pathogen-free status
  • Maintain relevant documentation and records (e.g. animal health records, medical histories, abnormal observations)
  • Monitors animal welfare and care to ensure that PTP is in compliance with standards for animal welfare and health programs, guidelines and regulations
  • Monitors on-study animals for health and husbandry care
  • Provides pre-procedural and post-procedural care to animals
  • Coordinates with direct supervisor, Core Director and investigators for optimal scheduling and conduct of experiments
  • Assists direct supervisor, Core Director and research staff in conducting imaging experiments
  • Provides training and/or instruction to research staff on the use of instrumentation and animal procedures, as required
  • Collects and processes biological samples for imaging
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor's/Associate's degree in Lab Animal Science, Biology, Toxicology, or Agricultural preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: 4+ years of experience in a professional animal care facility (e.g. zoo, veterinary clinic, laboratory animal facility)
  • Experience Exception: 2+ years of experience with Associate's degree.
  • Experience Exception: no prior industry experience with Bachelor's.
  • Prior experience within area preferred (e.g., animal handling and restraint; animal health monitoring; operation and sanitization/sterilization of equipment; sample collection).
  • Some experience working with software tools to maintain documentation/records.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician/ Certified Veterinary Technician/Licensed Veterinary Technician (RVT/CVT/LVT) preferred.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) required within 18 months.

  • The employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment and may be required to shower onsite on a daily basis to prevent cross contamination. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can reach higher decibel levels depending on job function.
  • An essential function of the job is to be able to comply with all applicable federal, state and local safety and health regulations that would apply to this job.
  • The employee must move about the work space to access work surface and shelves, cabinets, drawers, and equipment that are at, below or above the work surface.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $24.00 - $42.00 per hour for the role of Senior Animal Imaging Technician.
