The Writer, Office of Strategy & Alliances is a key member of the Pediatric Translational Neuroscience Initiative (PTNI) and will develop informative, accessible, and compelling content for a variety of audiences to describe the work conducted by PTNI and through PTNI alliances with internal and external stakeholders. Content development will include developing blog posts, white papers, program and project summaries, and other materials as needed.

This position will report to the Operations Program Manager in the Office of Strategy & Alliances and will work closely with the St. Jude SCEO team to ensure that content development maps to the strategic communication plan for both PTNI and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The writer will regularly engage with PTNI faculty and staff.​


This position may be eligible for remote work.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop content for a variety of audiences, including the general public, St. Jude employees, patient advocacy groups, researchers and clinicians  

  • Develop varied types of written communications in different writing styles (e.g., press releases, blog posts, reports, web content, white papers) 

  • Develop presentations using PowerPoint and other software programs as appropriate 

  • Provide copyediting support for a range of materials and deliverables 

  • Conduct basic research, as appropriate, to facilitate content development. Expertise in biomedical research is not expected, but proficiency in writing about biological concepts, translational research, clinical trial development, and healthcare is essential.  

  • Maintain a database of PTNI content  

  • Perform duties with meticulous attention to accuracy and detail  

  • Develop content in collaboration with researchers, staff and key stakeholders as appropriate   

  • Capture notes and develop summaries of conferences, workshops, meetings and other activities, as required.  

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the goals of PTNI. 

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance

  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.

Pertinent skills, knowledge and abilities the person should have to be successful in the job. 

  • Ability to provide cogent critical analysis of complex topics. 

  • Strong skill in writing and editing materials describing complex topics, including scientific research. 

  • Skill in planning, organizing, and producing lay-friendly materials describing scientific research projects. 

  • Ability to coordinate work by numerous contributors and to manage complex processes for preparation, review, and publication. 

  • Ability to utilize time efficiently, manage schedules, and meet deadlines while assuring the production of high-quality written materials and images. 

  • Advanced skills in using standard word-processing programs for writing and editing as well as specialized applications such as Adobe Creative Suite and One Note or other reference management systems. 

  • Ability to distill information from meetings and other related activities into clearly written pieces designed for various audiences.  


Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences or related field required.
  • Master's degree OR PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: 2+ years of relevant experience in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in advertising or marketing, social media, journalism, and writing in life sciences or healthcare environment.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $70,720 - $126,880 per year for the role of Scientific Writer-Pediatric Translational Neuroscience Initiative.
