STAFF SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING ENGINEER IN STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY
Memphis, TNThe Staff Scientific Computing Engineer advances data analysis projects by developing hardware/software solutions and providing technical leadership for critical scientific computing analysis platforms.
Job Responsibilities:
- Department system administrator responsible for managing and maintaining Linux based workstations and servers within the Department including Core Centers.
- Daily operational department support including configuring, troubleshooting, and software installation/updates of Linux machines both physical and virtual.
- Provide technical guidance to users including strategic recommendations for effective deployment of Linux workstations and related hardware.
- Data retrieval from remote and local sites and transferring the data to the proper storage spaces including data between Structural Biology Core Centers and High Performance Computing.
- Liaison between end user and support teams outside of the department including Information Services, Information Security, Laboratory Information Technology, and High Performance Research Computing.
- Work independently to advance data analysis projects in collaboration with the team and other researchers.
- Develop hardware and/or software solutions that include guidelines and best practices to ensure data analysis workflow robustness, functionality, usability, reliability, and availability.
- Provide technical leadership in design, technical implementation, and operational health of critical scientific computing analysis platforms.
- Serve as a technology advocate and thought leader within the St. Jude Data Science community, inspiring productive change through practical scientific computing solutions, guiding implementation strategy, and providing strategic recommendations.
- Engage with leadership and other internal/external technical experts driving data analysis initiatives strategically within St. Jude.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Education and/or Training:
- Bachelor's degree in relevant area (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, computer engineering) required.
- Master's degree preferred.
Minimum Experience:
- Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience in applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computational biology, computer engineering, or relevant area.
- Experience Exception: Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Motivated self-starter with an open mind to continuous improvement efforts and long-term, scalable solutions.
- Critical thinker with proven ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently and successfully.
- Demonstrated knowledge of multiple computing languages (C/C++, Python, HTML, Jinja, Javascript, CSS, etc.) through proven application to resolve technical problems.
- Experienced and well versed with Red Hat Enterprise Linux is preferred.
- Proven ability to effectively communicate technically challenging and complex issues to non-technical team members.
- Significant experience (including code repositories or published works) in independent scientific analyses and/or image data management.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more applied computational fields: application of modern machine learning methodology, algorithms, computational modeling, finite element analysis, computational geometry, fluid mechanics, scientific visualization, HPC and distributed computing.
- Substantial experience in programming (i.e., fluent in two or more common computer languages).
- Demonstrated experience in the analysis and management of scientific data, including one or more of the following: scientific data visualization, scientific computer code optimization, development of machine learning solutions, deep learning, numerical optimization, application of advanced statistical methods, and development of scientific software.
- Experience working with large data volumes.
- Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.
Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
