SCIENCE RESEARCH WRITER - DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY

Memphis, TN

The Science Research Writer will be responsible for the full spectrum of research publication, from conceptualization to dissemination. This includes authoring original research articles, editing and revising manuscripts, preparing book chapters and review articles, and developing website content. Additionally, the writer will actively seek funding opportunities by preparing and submitting major grant applications and project proposals. To effectively communicate research findings, the writer will develop and deliver presentations at scientific conferences, seminars, institutional meetings, fundraising events, and public outreach sessions.
The Science Research Writer will work with faculty within the Department of Developmental Neurobiology. The writer will need to be in-person as the candidate needs to get to know the faculty, their research, and their style of writing. Relocation assistance is available.

The Department of Developmental Neurobiology (DNB) has multidisciplinary teams that are working urgently to advance promising new therapeutic approaches into clinical trials. Cutting-edge technologies essential to our mission are developed and deployed in our innovation hubs. Our aim is to contribute to discoveries that will save lives and improve the quality of life for children with catastrophic illnesses. The Scientific Writer plays an integral role in working with a dynamic group of research faculty, staff, and trainees to provide scientific and technical writing expertise and support.

Responsibilities will include drafting and editing narratives required for funding applications, progress reports, conference abstracts, original scientific manuscripts, review articles, press releases, institutional protocols, compliance documents, and related tasks.


Ideal Experience & Skills:

  • PhD degree, preferably in neuroscience or related field.

  • A strong scientific background and previous scientific and/or medical writing are required with excellent research, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Proven ability to write clear, concise, and engaging content for diverse audiences and platforms (articles, videos, social media, etc.).

  • Experience collaborating with scientists and researchers.

  • Strong project management and organization skills are desirable for this position.

  • Experience with writing for social media platforms is considered an asset.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Draft and edit prose required for funding applications, progress reports, conference abstracts, original scientific manuscripts, review articles, press releases, institutional protocols, and compliance documents.

  • Participate on project teams through collaborative engagement within DNB and across other departments.

  • Manage/prioritize multiple projects under general supervision, working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals and objectives of DNB and the institution.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.


Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Master's degree in life sciences or a related field required.

  • PhD preferred.


Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum requirement: 2+ years of experience as a scientific editor or relevant research and publication.

  • Experience in the construction of scientific documents (journal articles or grant applications) preferred.

  • Experience in experimental design; statistical principles; effective display of scientific data; and publication policies, procedures, and ethics.

  • Experience in the construction of NIH grant applications preferred.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $70,720 - $126,880 per year for the role of Science Research Writer - Department of Developmental Neurobiology.
