ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST – GIBSON LAB, DEPARTMENT OF CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Memphis, TN

Join Our Team!

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a motivated and collaborative Associate Scientist to join the Gibson Lab. The Gibson Lab investigates how biomolecular phase transitions guide higher-order genome structure and influence disease. We combine biochemistry, genomics, cellular engineering, and advanced microscopy to build and perturb chromatin condensates in vitro and in cells, with the goal of revealing mechanisms that control genome organization and gene regulation.

We are seeking an organized scientist who is looking to support the laboratory while continuing to engage in research at the interface of chromatin biology, condensate biophysics, and genome regulation. The ideal candidate will contribute both scientifically and organizationally, dedicating approximately 50% of their effort to independent research and 50% to supporting laboratory operations and team efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or support a research project in chromatin biology, depending on prior experience and expertise.

  • Serve as a key organizer for the Gibson Lab by maintaining equipment, tracking supplies, and ensuring smooth lab operations.

  • Independently design and troubleshoot experiments using standard and emerging techniques.

  • Support onboarding and training of new lab members on scientific methods and instrumentation.

  • Collaborate with team members to foster a supportive, respectful, and productive research environment.

  • Provide mentorship to junior team members.

  • Stay current with advances in the field and bring new ideas into lab discussions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Cell Biology, or related field with 7+ years research experience.

  • Master’s degree with 5+ years research experience, or PhD with 2+ years research experience.

  • Demonstrated track record of laboratory research, including independent experimental execution and data analysis.

  • Experience coordinating scientific projects, maintaining lab operations, or mentoring others preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chromatin biochemistry/biophysics, protein purification, quantitative imaging, or single-molecule assays.

  • Evidence of scholarly output (publications, posters, or similar).

  • Clear communication skills, with an openness to productive feedback.

  • A naturally organized and detail-focused mindset.

What You’ll Gain

  • The opportunity to advance science with global impact in a mission-driven organization.

  • Grow new skills with protected time for research.

  • Mentorship, feedback, and professional development in a collaborative research culture.

  • A collaborative research community at St. Jude.
