The Lead Researcher performs a variety of basic laboratory research tasks determined by the field and scope of the particular research project/study. Also, performs tasks related to the research project independently, but within specific guidelines which are subject to review by supervisor and/or other research staff.

Join a world-class team led by Dr. Jeffery Klco, Director of the Division of Hematopathology and Molecular Pathology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Klco Lab specializes in identifying genetic drivers of pediatric myeloid malignancies, such as Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndromes, using cutting-edge genomic and in vivo modeling techniques.


The Klco Lab seeks an experienced lead researcher to support its goal of defining the molecular and biological causes of pediatric myeloid tumors. The ideal candidate will have experience with tissue culture, molecular biology, and the care, handling, and husbandry of research models. Candidates must be highly motivated, well-organized, keep meticulous records, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. A collaborative attitude is essential.


What You’ll Do:

  • Tissue culture and characterization of hematopoietic stem cells – e.g., culture of primary cells and cell lines, transduction of cells with viral vectors, flow cytometry, and cell sorting.
  • Molecular biology – e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, western blotting.
  • Tissue banking of xenograft models.
  • Assisting in the day-to-day operations of the lab under the supervision of the lab manager.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of research model colonies under the supervision of the colony manager.
  • Keeping accurate data records and notebooks, analyzing data, and presenting results at lab meetings.
  • Supporting manuscript and grant submissions.

Other Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and perform procedures using established or modified techniques/protocols
  • Implement new but established protocols without individual training
  • Troubleshoot experiments and identify anomalies in own data
  • Consistently monitors current literature and trends within field
  • Accurately record experimental procedures and data
  • Prepare and report results/ data leading to posters, presentations, or publications
  • Provide guidance to less-experienced team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.


Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific area is required


Minimum Experience:

  • 5+ years of research experience is required

  • 3+ years of experience is required with a Master’s degree

  • No prior experience required with a PHD

  • Strong knowledge and experience in understanding and application of underlying principles related to techniques being performed

  • Experience in R&D methods and processes in lab setting, and execution of research projects for the laboratory preferred

  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $60,320 - $105,040 per year for the role of Lead Researcher - Pathology (Klco Lab).
