HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic
Maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, and operates clinical, pharmaceutical, laboratory, research, and food grade storage refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, and controlled environmental rooms (CER)s as well as packaged air conditioning units, fan coil units, and dehumidifiers. In this role, you will use hand and power tools to repair and/or fabricate items by sketches, diagrams, or manufacture specification to restore equipment to operation. Lastly, the mechanic must provide rapid, friendly, and quality customer service to our patients, their families, scientists, staff, and visitors. This role will focus mainly on refrigeration equipment. Main duties include, but are not limited to: 1. Maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, adjust, calibrate, validate, certify, test, and operate clinical, pharmaceutical, laboratory, research, and food grade storage refrigerators, freezers, and controlled environmental rooms (CER)s. a. Clean all condenser coils. b. Connect vacuum and pressure gauges, electromechanical controls, and other accessories. c. Perform installation and setup of refrigeration equipment. d. Perform troubleshooting and repairs. e. Replenish lubricants and refrigerants. f. Update onboard software when applicable. 2. Maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, adjust, and operate specialty equipment such as cascade refrigeration systems (e.g., -80°C ultra-low freezers), laboratory equipment with refrigeration capabilities (e.g., refrigerated centrifuges, refrigerated shavers, cryostats, lyophilizers, refrigerated shakers, and microscope chillers), packaged air conditioning units, fan coil units, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers. a. Clean all condenser coils. b. Connect vacuum and pressure gauges, electromechanical controls, and other accessories. c. Perform installation and setup of refrigeration equipment. d. Perform troubleshooting and repairs. e. Replenish lubricants and refrigerants. f. Update onboard software when applicable. 3. Maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, adjust, calibrate, validate, certify, test, and operate clinical, pharmaceutical, laboratory, research, and food grade ice machines. a. Perform cleaning and sanitization. b. Perform installation, setup, startup, and verification of correct operation. c. Perform troubleshooting and repairs. d. Replace inlet water filters. 4. Interpret and clarify work order request for all types Refrigeration Technician duties. a. Evaluate to ensure requests do not violate regulatory codes. b. Respond to requests, providing a time frame of completion and cost estimate. 5. Order material according to specifications. a. Evaluate inventory and re-order necessary material to maintain minimum stock. b. Interpret blueprints and documentation to determine needed materials. 6. Assist staff with related work requests to accurately determine specific needs. a. Ensure a clear understanding of requests through oral and written communication. b. Provide accurate description(s) for needed parts to vendors for cost estimates. 7. Use hand and power tools to repair and fabricate necessary requests. a. Accurately use job related equipment to perform duties by specification. b. Troubleshoot refrigeration equipment to determine problems and necessary repair. 8. Install refrigeration related equipment purchased by customer. a. Assemble and install equipment as specified by manufacturer. b. Evaluate to ensure equipment meets designed specification. c. Startup and verify correct operation of equipment as specified by manufacturer. 9. Perform Preventive Maintenance (PM). a. Evaluate PM procedures to determine specific needs and complete as directed. b. Implement recommended procedures if approved. Make recommendations of any changes needed. c. Use St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s building automation system to verify analog (e.g., temperatures) and digital (e.g., alarm) data points. 10. Perform other related duties as assigned, or directed, to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution. An example includes moving standby refrigeration to customer locations due to defrosting or equipment failure.
